Job Description
Position Overview
Starting placement will generally not exceed 15% of the advertised initial salary range and is based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. The purpose of this job is to assist in providing safe, efficient and sustainable roadways, transportation amenities, and stormwater facilities throughout Leon County that enhance livability, the environment, and economic vitality. The candidate will review site and development plans for conformity to design standards, applicable codes, ordinances, and county policies, assist in the design of road improvements and new constructions, evaluate citizen requests for traffic safety and stormwater issues, and provide professional support throughout public infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides Engineering Design Support – assists in the design of Public Works projects including roads, parks, drainage, and subdivision improvements, conducts traffic studies, manages traffic count data, prepares engineering cost estimates, and creates technical exhibits using GIS or CAD.
- Reviews Site Development Plans – ensures plans conform to accepted design standards, codes, ordinances, and county policies; prepares memorandums summarizing review findings and addresses queries from developers, the public, or other stakeholders.
- Assists with Close-Out for Projects – reviews engineering cost estimates related to maintenance and performance bonds, examines storm sewer videos and compliance reports, and verifies record drawings against approved documents.
- Performs Field and Miscellaneous Tasks – conducts field inspections to ensure compliance with plans and applicable laws; visits sites to investigate citizen complaints and provide problem analysis and resolution recommendations; represents the County on technical committees and supports engineering studies including research, evaluation, and reporting.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Requirements: Valid Florida Driver's license with a favorable driving record and Engineer Intern Certification or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.
