Job Description
Position Overview
The National Hockey League (NHL®), founded in 1917, is the premier professional ice hockey league in the world with over 1500 employees across the US and Canada. We are looking for a dynamic and detail‐oriented professional for the role of Director of Finance who will be responsible for financial oversight of the Tentpole International and Domestic Events businesses. This position plays a crucial role in supporting NHL’s mission of building healthy, vibrant communities in and around the sport of hockey.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the operating P&L files by ensuring current projections and actuals are updated timely and accurately.
- Manage recording of ticket revenues by coordinating with the Events ticketing team to reconcile revenues, cash, applicable sales tax, and service fees.
- Oversee major expense management (e.g., venue settlements) and track other expenses to ensure adherence to approved budgets.
- Review expense budget submissions, identify cost efficiencies, and build/manage event key deadlines including post event Flash reports.
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close including accruals, journal entries, reconciliations, and variance explanations.
- Manage, document, and track the financial terms of expense contracts while establishing robust relationships with internal departments and external vendors.
- Analyze current processes to identify opportunities for improved efficiency and provide support to external auditors as required.
- Lead and mentor two direct reports by setting clear priorities, roles, and work plans.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of relevant work experience including budgeting/forecasting and month-end close processes.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and priorities with meticulous attention to detail.
- Self-motivated, organized, and capable of taking initiative to resolve problems.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; travel may be required.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and working knowledge of SAP4 Hana/SAC.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with event or project accounting is a plus.
- Accounting or finance degree from a four-year college or university is preferred.
