Job Description
Position Overview
Located in Chicago, Illinois at Rush University Medical Center’s RML Specimen Acquisition department, we are seeking a dedicated Phlebotomist to join our team. In this full‑time role (FTE between 0.9 and 1.0) on Shift 1 (4:00 AM – 12:30 PM), you will obtain blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and related procedures. You will act as a liaison between physicians and the laboratory, ensuring proper identification and timely processing of specimens. The position offers a competitive hourly rate of $16.75 - $21.07 per hour.
Key Responsibilities
- Suggest and develop new ideas and approaches in the workplace; exhibit adaptability and willingness to change.
- Create constructive relationships with peers, management, customers, and other departments.
- Respond promptly to pages and report back to the laboratory when assigned work is complete.
- Verify patient identification and label specimens correctly according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) at all times.
- Collect specimens using proper phlebotomy techniques and adhere to laboratory requirements.
- Establish and maintain positive, productive working relationships that inspire goodwill, trust, and cooperation.
- Act as a resource for technical questions and demonstrate thorough knowledge of specimen collection protocols, including order of draw and scheduling.
- Attend and document required continuing education hours and assist in training students and new employees.
- Organize and prioritize workload: collect timed specimens within 30 minutes, send via pneumatic tube within 45 minutes (or 10 minutes for timed collections), and monitor soiled utility rooms for specimens.
- Maintain a neat, clean, and organized work area and replenish supplies at the end of each shift.
- Notify appropriate personnel of any problems or unusual situations encountered, and attempt to resolve issues thoroughly before reporting to a supervisor.
- Perform accurate LIS order entry, double-check orders, and complete specimen accessioning and processing.
- Document missed or delayed draws and manage laboratory orders by collecting, canceling, and rescheduling as necessary.
- Participate in special projects or events, such as health screenings and phlebotomy training sessions.
- Act as tech-in-charge during specified periods, overseeing operations according to departmental guidelines and deferring issues appropriately.
Required Qualifications
- High School Graduate.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- National Phlebotomy Association or equivalent certification.
- Two years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
