Position Overview
We're hiring an Acute Mechanical Circulatory Support/ECMO Specialist with a background in respiratory therapy for the Clinical & Procedural Services department at University of Chicago Medicine in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL. This full-time night role (6:30 pm to 7:00 am) is integral to providing direct patient care across neonatal, pediatric, and adult populations requiring extracorporeal life support. Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients requiring extracorporeal life support.
- Prepare life support systems according to case and age appropriateness.
- Assist surgeons with the initiation of AMCS/ECMO support in emergent situations.
- Implement, operate, manage, and troubleshoot the life support system.
- Function independently following established AMCS/ECMO orders under surgeon direction and managerial supervision.
- Continuously assess patients and equipment during support.
- Monitor patients continuously during surgical procedures.
- Manage the extracorporeal circuit and diagnose complications of extracorporeal physiology.
- Maintain communication with managing surgeons and troubleshoot equipment as necessary.
- Document patient care-related activities accurately.
- Ensure that pump supplies and emergency equipment are readily available.
- Discontinue support as directed by the surgical team and clean equipment post-use.
- Perform other duties as assigned in high-stress, multidisciplinary team settings.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
- Three or more years of critical care experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
- Valid license as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of Illinois.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Current certifications in NRP, PALS, and ACLS.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of ECMO experience.
- NPS or ACCS credentials.
