Position Overview
The Vice President Revenue Cycle Hospital Billing for the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) is accountable for hospital billing performance across the medical center and reports to the Chief Revenue Officer. As a senior leader within the Revenue Cycle structure, the VP is responsible for overseeing all hospital billing operations – ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. This role drives strategic initiatives to optimize revenue capture, enhance the patient financial experience, and strengthen overall organizational financial performance by partnering with clinical, financial, and operational leaders.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides strategic direction for hospital billing operations within the broader revenue cycle framework.
- Develops and executes initiatives to improve billing accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
- Establishes performance metrics and accountability structures to monitor and enhance departmental outcomes.
- Oversees daily billing operations, including claims processing, denials management, and collections.
- Implements best practices and technology solutions to streamline workflows and reduce errors.
- Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with Revenue Cycle leaders and key stakeholders.
- Maintains a strong understanding of revenue performance metrics and payer mix, leading the team to support operational departments through analytical capabilities, process improvements, and technology enhancements.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and payer regulations, including HIPAA and CMS guidelines.
- Collaborates with finance on month-end revenue performance, identifying trends and opportunities for optimization.
- Drives initiatives to maximize net revenue through effective billing practices and denial prevention.
- Partners with finance teams to forecast, monitor, and report on billing performance and revenue cycle KPIs.
- Leads efforts to reduce accounts receivable days and improve cash flow.
- Develops, communicates, and builds support for recommendations to meet changing regulatory requirements and ensure appropriate reimbursement.
- Leads the development and implementation of consistent policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
- Maintains strong customer relationships with key strategic partners.
- Engages appropriate functional strategic partners throughout the process.
- Monitors and reports to senior management on key performance metrics.
- Brings developing issues and recommended actions to the attention of senior leadership and governance committees.
- Develops and ensures compliance with standardized policies, processes, and programs across the MSHS.
- Oversees activities with Compliance to ensure effective communication, coordination, policies, and audits.
- Develops a high-performing team as measured by process outcomes, audit results, financial goals, and employee satisfaction.
- Stays current with government regulations regarding billing and charging requirements.
- Establishes goals, objectives, and budgets for assigned areas and monitors performance accordingly.
- Ensures adherence to HIPAA privacy and security standards.
- Conforms to established policies, procedures, processes, and standards of behavior.
- Performs other duties as required by the CRO or other C-level officers.
Required Qualifications
- Deep knowledge of healthcare billing regulations, payer requirements, and compliance standards.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with experience presenting to senior management.
- Proven track record of leading large teams and driving measurable improvements in billing performance.
- Strong leadership skills to motivate cross-departmental teams using consensus-building management styles.
- Advanced interpersonal, written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- Experience in revenue cycle technology platforms and emerging AI solutions.
- Ability to manage change and prioritize multiple objectives in a rapidly evolving environment.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships at all levels within the organization.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership in hospital billing or revenue cycle management.
- Bachelor’s Degree Required
