Job Description

Position Overview

Collects patient specimens, performs venous and capillary punctures, processes specimens for analysis, handles telephone requests and inquiries, provides instructions to clients and patients regarding specimen collection, enters test orders from paper requisitions into the Laboratory System, performs waived testing as requested, and travels between assigned clinic and outreach facilities using a personal or hospital-provided vehicle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect patient specimens and perform venous and capillary punctures.
  • Process specimens for analysis.
  • Handle telephone requests and inquiries while providing proper instructions regarding specimen collection.
  • Enter test orders from paper requisitions into the Laboratory System.
  • Perform waived testing as requested.
  • Travel between assigned clinic and outreach sites safely using a personal or hospital-provided vehicle.

Required Qualifications

  • One year of phlebotomy experience is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance required.
  • Must meet hospital insurance requirements for driving hospital-owned vehicles.
  • High School diploma or equivalent education required.
  • Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant certificate of course completion required.
  • Basic knowledge in the use of computers.
  • Understanding of the circulatory system, blood composition, and medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary techniques.
  • Familiarity with handling, transporting, and processing laboratory specimens.
  • Knowledge of processes associated with waived testing as well as blood and non-blood specimen collection.
  • Commitment to safety, quality assurance/control, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to efficiently travel between multiple clinic and outreach sites while safely transporting specimens and supplies.
