Position Overview
KFI Engineers, a recognized industry leader in facility infrastructure design since 1996, is seeking a Mechanical Designer I for its Utilities & Central Energy (UCE) department. In this entry-level role, you will produce construction documents using AutoCAD Plant 3D and Revit while focusing on mechanical design fundamentals across HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems. You will work within a team environment, coordinating with other engineering disciplines to ensure high-quality project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Layout and design mechanical systems for assigned projects, including HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems.
- Prepare General Arrangement Drawings, P&IDs, and construction documents.
- Create 3D models and piping isometric drawings.
- Perform redlines using AutoCAD and Revit independently.
- Develop schematic-level mechanical room equipment layouts with guidance.
- Perform accurate design calculations and measurements while maintaining consistent work quality.
- Coordinate project design with other engineering disciplines.
- Serve as a CAD and design resource, providing training and support to team members when assigned.
- Participate in Smart 3D Design projects under supervision.
- Size and select components for mechanical systems, including duct and pipe sizing for air and water systems.
- Identify various valve types for mechanical systems.
- Conduct construction observations and assist with field surveys under supervision.
- Support project execution with administrative tasks such as filing and printing.
- Engage in on-the-job training to develop skills in QA self-checks, design standards, and project execution fundamentals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- An AAS Degree in Mechanical Design/Drafting or equivalent work experience.
- Experience Required: 0-4 years in mechanical design or a related field.
- Legally authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without the need for visa sponsorship.
- Internship and/or work experience in central boiler/chiller plants, agribusiness process plants, facility manufacturing, food manufacturing/clean systems, underground tunnel distribution systems, or mechanical equipment/skid design.
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to professional customer service.
- Willingness to travel domestically (up to 10%).
Preferred Qualifications
- Field experience in a consulting and/or construction capacity.
- Experience with 3D modeling software, particularly AutoCAD Plant 3D.
- Basic understanding of other engineering disciplines such as Electrical and Structural Engineering.

- Compensation: $27.00 - $34.00 per hour, with the final rate based on individual qualifications, experience, work location, and education.
