Entry Level Personal Lines Underwriter

Position Overview

Our caring associates create financial security for individuals and businesses. Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated underwriting trainee to join our team. In this role, you will apply insurance coverage rules and guidelines to make underwriting decisions in line with our company philosophy. While the initial training is in-person, you may enjoy the flexibility of a work-from-home program as determined by the leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

• Learn various insurance coverages and contracts along with company philosophy and procedures to make underwriting decisions.
• Read, interpret, and react to documents such as policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements.
• Assemble information, develop opinions, and clearly express decisions using sound reasoning and judgment.
• Analyze loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks.
• Acquire a working knowledge of the supporting sections of the underwriting department.
• Effectively communicate with independent agents and other associates through verbal and written means.
• Participate in and successfully complete the Company underwriter training program.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or direct equivalent experience with property/casualty underwriting.
• Ability to organize data, multi-task, and make decisions independently.
• Above average written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to write reports and compose correspondence.
• Capacity to resolve complex issues effectively.
• Commitment to continually develop product knowledge through approved educational programs.
