Job Description

Position Overview

The City of Oakland is seeking qualified Assistant Engineer candidates for multiple vacancies in various departments including Transportation (OakDOT), Public Works, and Planning & Building. As a public service role in one of the nation’s most diverse cities, you will help deliver innovative, equitable, and sustainable solutions—from creating multimodal transit corridors and improving infrastructure to ensuring building code compliance. Key Responsibilities

  • Review project plans and building permit applications to ensure compliance with model building codes and standards.
  • Assist in designing, supporting, and overseeing capital projects such as transportation corridors, street improvements, and infrastructure rehabilitation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders, and various City departments to deliver safe, accessible, and sustainable outcomes.
  • Lead efforts using AutoCAD for in-house design projects including civil, demo, striping, electrical, and landscaping plans.
  • Provide quality control, field inspections, and construction oversight in support of project implementation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (a Master's degree may substitute for one year of experience).
  • At least two (2) years of civil engineering experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License or demonstrate the ability to travel to various work locations in a timely manner.
  • Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with engineering codes and manuals (e.g., Building Code, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Green Book).
  • Strong technical knowledge in areas such as project design, financial cost assessments, and safety standards.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and multidisciplinary project coordination.
