Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking professionals to join our Mechanical Engineering team as a Mechanical Design Engineer – ONSITE in Rockville, MD. In this role you will support the development of Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Systems by designing and developing mechanical systems, structures, and components such as Reactor Internal Structures, Steam Generator System, Helium Circulator System, Graphite Core Components, Reactor Cavity Cooling System, and Nuclear Auxiliary Systems. You will be involved in concept development, system analysis, prototyping, testing, and commissioning while ensuring compliance with technical specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical/physical concepts and design processes for structures, systems, and components (SSCs) with a focus on nuclear safety.
  • Coordinate with key stakeholders to document requirements, interfaces, design basis, and criteria.
  • Plan and perform analyses to assess the ability of SSCs to perform intended functions and meet design requirements.
  • Perform computations using hand calculations and analytical tools for structural, thermal, hydraulic, and related analyses.
  • Develop innovative mechanical solutions for reactors including design of pressure vessels and reactor internals.
  • Integrate design activities across engineering teams, partners, and suppliers.
  • Create and maintain CAD-generated engineering models of reactor SSCs.
  • Support assessments for manufacturability, assembly, and integration of systems.
  • Prepare design documentation such as design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, and drawings.
  • Develop Verification and Validation (V&V) plans and support toolset qualification.
  • Adhere to quality procedures for design and configuration management while providing independent reviews of engineering deliverables.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor in all communications and perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations.
  • Experience in designing and developing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience in developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes, including manufacturing and testing oversight.
  • Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and product lifecycle management (PLM) software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in highly regulated industries such as aerospace, medical devices, automotive, or defense electronics.
  • Expertise in component-level design of high-pressure vessels, fluid systems, reactors, and related systems.
  • Experience in a lead or managerial role.
  • Experience with commercial nuclear power plant operations is preferred.
  • Familiarity with NRC regulations and licensing requirements for safety-related systems.
  • Knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code and other industry standards.
  • Hands-on experience with graphite or other non-metallic components.
