Position Overview
Kern Medical has been a community cornerstone since 1867 and is now an acute care teaching center with 222 beds offering the only advanced trauma care between Fresno and Los Angeles. Serving 15,500 inpatients and 125,000 clinic patients a year, Kern Medical also provides a range of primary, specialty, and multi-specialty services including high‐risk pregnancy care, inpatient psychiatric services, and a growing network of outpatient clinics. This opportunity is for a Medical Assistant - Pediatrics Clinic - Full Time position. Compensation: The estimated pay for this role is $22.26 to $28.36 per hour (including a 6% premium) with additional differentials, incentives, and bonuses available. Eligible employees may also participate in the Kern County Employees' Retirement Plan.
Key Responsibilities
- Escort patients to exam rooms; prepare patients for exam and treatment; take and record vital signs and other necessary measurements; record chief complaint and allergies.
- Administer immunizations, medications, office tests, and treatments as ordered by the provider; collect, prepare, and transport specimens for laboratory testing.
- Apply and remove bandages, wound dressings, and orthopedic appliances; assist with exams, procedures, and minor surgeries, acting as chaperone when needed.
- Follow universal blood and body fluid precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
- Assist with telephone inquiries, prepare referral forms, clean and disinfect equipment and exam rooms, order supplies, and maintain patient medical records.
- Perform additional duties such as urine pregnancy testing and other tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent with successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- For entry-level Medical Assistant I: Possess and maintain a current, clean American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card; must obtain RQI Responder certification within 60 days if not already certified.
- For Medical Assistant II: In addition to the above, must hold certification as a Medical Assistant (through the American Association of Medical Assistants, American Medical Technologists, or California Certifying Board of Medical Assistants) and a current BLS card.
- Ability to utilize patient care techniques, follow written and oral instructions, and react competently in emergency situations.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, metric measurements, and patient care equipment.
- Applicants must submit transcripts or certificates verifying completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
