Position Overview
At Slate, we’re building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love while supporting reindustrialization in the USA. Slate is looking for an energetic, organized, experienced Vehicle Engineering Technician, Prototype who will play an integral role on the Engineering team throughout product development and launch. Reporting to the Senior Technician, Garage Services, you will maintain prototype builds, diagnose and rectify issues, fabricate parts as required, and support overall vehicle integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the development and build of engineering test vehicles.
- Work closely with the Engineering department to develop and test solutions for technical challenges.
- Inspect and modify existing designs and prototypes, utilizing CAD software to implement feedback.
- Conduct experiments, diagnostics, calibrations, and investigations under the guidance of Engineers.
- Track and communicate open issues, arrange meetings to resolve them, and offer improvement suggestions.
- Collect data, create detailed reports on prototype progress, and assist with presentations.
- Fabricate components as needed and maintain shop tools, equipment, and a clean work environment.
- Coordinate maintenance and cleaning of company fleet vehicles and work with the assembly plant on potential vehicle assembly issues.
- Ensure compliance with shop safety guidelines and contribute to efficiency improvements in methods and processes.
Required Qualifications
- Must possess at least one of the following: Associate’s degree from an accredited college, completion of an Automotive Vocational Program, ASE Master Technician Certification, or Master Technician Certification from an automotive OEM.
- 8+ years of experience as a Prototype Engineering Technician, preferably with Hybrid or Electric Vehicles.
- Hands-on experience with high voltage electric vehicles and systems, including diagnostic troubleshooting and testing.
- Proficient in reading electrical schematics and understanding basic electrical theory.
- Skilled in vehicle diagnostics and ECU troubleshooting on CAN and LIN buses.
- Experienced in operating and maintaining hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and fabricating parts with a variety of materials.
- Knowledgeable regarding Health and Safety protocols.
- Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, organizational, and time management skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to participate in presentations and collaborate in a fast-paced team environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for data capture and report writing.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with an automotive OEM.
- Experience with CAD and Polarion.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements.
