Job Description
Position Overview
The RN 2 is a competent nurse who has mastered technical skills. This role identifies patterns in patient responses and uses past experiences to implement solutions for current situations. The RN 2 consults with other members of the health care team when additional assistance is needed and exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values while adhering to policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Participates in the collection of data to support unit-based quality initiatives, research, and evidence-based activities.
- Utilizes system-wide resources to support decision making and action.
- Recognizes patterns of problems in specific patient populations and initiates actions to address them.
- Communicates current evidence-based information with peers.
- Establishes a caring, therapeutic relationship with patients and families through effective communication and mutual goal setting.
- Collaborates consistently and effectively with other disciplines and services.
- Utilizes competent assessment skills to evaluate the physical and psychosocial needs of patients and families.
- Prioritizes care for complex patients based on previous clinical experiences.
- Recognizes changes in patient status and responds effectively.
- Uses medical devices safely and effectively in patient care.
- Implements policies related to safe and effective administration of medications.
- Assesses patient safety needs and implements appropriate strategies (e.g., fall precautions, infection control, suicide risk identification).
- Individualizes teaching plans based on thorough assessment to meet learning needs.
- Provides education to staff and students on the unit.
- Demonstrates beginning leadership skills and delegates to optimize patient outcomes.
- Maintains accountability for professional practice and progression toward annual goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure is required.
- Maintain current BLS certification.
- Earned nursing degree at the baccalaureate level or higher (Note: Associates Degree in Nursing [ADN] may be accepted under specified conditions; a baccalaureate degree must be earned within the outlined timeframe and all conditions of employment must be met).
- Analytical ability and effective communication skills are required for leadership and teaching.
- Ability to interact effectively with others in challenging situations.
- Must be able to walk throughout the Medical Center and remain on feet for most of the shift.
- Ability to lift or carry objects weighing 35-40 lbs, and safely lift and position patients (some may exceed 300 lbs).
- Capability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard for data entry, and closely examine specimens, images, or reports.
- Comfort with performing procedures where carelessness may lead to injury, illness, or exposure to infectious materials and/or strong chemicals.
