Job Description

Position Overview

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is recruiting a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Small Farms Advisor. This role conducts an integrated program of extension and applied research to support economic viability and sustainable production on small-scale farms in Fresno and Madera Counties. The Advisor will work with specialty crop producers—ranging from limited‐resource and beginning farmers to diversified growers—offering tailored outreach, consultation, and technical assistance to address production, policy, and market challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct integrated extension and applied research to support small-scale farms.
  • Provide field consultations, workshops, presentations, and on-farm technical assistance.
  • Develop and implement science-based research programs addressing crop production, economics, and policy issues.
  • Supervise the Hmong Agricultural Assistant and guide county-based staff in outreach and education efforts.
  • Collaborate with UC faculty, partner organizations, and multidisciplinary teams to enhance technical support for small farms.

Required Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in plant science, agronomy, horticulture, agricultural economics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability in applied agricultural research and extension methods.
  • Experience in program and personnel management, including planning and evaluation of educational initiatives.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate within one year.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S. and compliance with all applicable University policies.

  • Proven experience in collaborating with partner organizations, government agencies, and diverse community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding and manage multiple research and outreach projects.
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging a wide range of audiences, including bilingual outreach capabilities.

  • Salary: Assistant Rank, Step I ($85,600) to Step VI ($108,600) based on experience and qualifications.
