Job Description

Position Overview

This position works as part of the Technology Infrastructure Division’s (TID) Enterprise Network Architecture and Engineering team. The countywide enterprise network is a large, complex Metropolitan (MAN) and Wide Area (WAN) secure infrastructure with two geo-diverse, highly available hyperconverged datacenters servicing 230+ Fairfax County locations.

As a Tier 3 Network Engineer, you will ensure high levels of network availability and reliability by designing, maintaining, and optimizing network infrastructure and addressing complex issues escalated from Tier 1 and Tier 2 support teams. Compensation: $85,318.48 - $142,197.95 Annually

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Enterprise Network Architecture team to design and implement scalable, secure LAN, WAN, and wireless solutions.
  • Deliver advanced-level network support by troubleshooting and resolving complex issues with routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless devices.
  • Analyze and resolve complex Layer 2 and Layer 3 network issues to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
  • Install, patch, configure, secure, and optimize network hardware to meet evolving business needs.
  • Design, configure, and optimize 802.11x wireless networking environments across enterprise locations.
  • Utilize advanced network monitoring tools to analyze performance metrics, identify bottlenecks, and recommend improvements.
  • Develop and maintain network documentation, diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with security teams to implement best practices including access controls, encryption, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
  • Lead or support network-related projects such as infrastructure upgrades and technology migrations.
  • Partner with IT teams, stakeholders, and vendors to address networking needs and drive continuous improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • Possession of an associate’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, or a related field plus four years’ network/telecommunications experience; or a bachelor’s degree in these fields plus two years’ experience in network or telecommunications system design, analysis, installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully complete criminal background and driving record checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge and experience with VLAN, VRF, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VPN, STP, DHCP, Trunk, and 802.11 standards, including MAN, WAN, LAN, SDWAN, and Wireless LAN architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with major network equipment manufacturers including routers, switches, and access points.
  • Experience with tools such as SolarWinds, Splunk, Catalyst Center, ISE, and Nexus Dashboard or equivalent systems.
  • Automation experience with scripting languages such as Python or similar.
  • Datacenter technology experience, such as Leaf and Spine architectures utilizing VxLAN in multi-datacenter environments.
  • Experience with NSX-T infrastructure using SDN technologies (VDS, T0/T1, DFW, AVI/ALB) and cloud networking.
  • In-depth experience with IP Address Management (IPAM) systems such as InfoBlox.
  • Experience in network incident management and related support practices.
  • Strong working knowledge of Layer 1 cable infrastructure, including Ethernet (CAT6/6A), fiber optics, and patching panels.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with a commitment to superior customer service.
