Software Engineering Apprenticeship (Summer 2026)

Position Overview

Software Engineering Apprentice (Summer 2026) at Gusto. We’re launching a 6-month, full-time, paid apprenticeship based in New York City or San Francisco for creative problem solvers in the early stages of their software journey. In this role, you’ll build real products alongside experienced engineers, developing strong engineering fundamentals while gradually taking on meaningful work.
Location: San Francisco, CA; New York, NY

Key Responsibilities

• Learn by doing: pair daily with engineers to design, code, test, and ship features safely and incrementally.
• Explain your thinking: discuss tradeoffs, ask clarifying questions, and articulate your reasoning in meetings, pull requests, and design reviews.
• Practice feedback as a skill: give and receive actionable feedback, iterating quickly with your mentor and teammates.
• Build breadth and depth: rotate pairing partners and tasks to expand your toolkit across frontend, backend, and testing.
• Grow your independence: progress from observer to driver to navigator with consistent support, celebrating steady, compounding wins.
• Share outcomes: demo your work and reflect on your learning progress as you advance toward L1 readiness.

Required Qualifications

• Creative thinker who can frame a problem, test an approach, and clearly explain their reasoning.
• Curiosity and humility: seeks feedback, adapts to new evidence, and persists through challenges.
• Strong communication skills in a collaborative, pair-heavy environment that bolster team performance.
• Evidence of learning and making: demonstrates creativity through self-directed projects, whether in art, writing, software experiments, or other mediums.
• Comfort with the basics in at least one programming language and eagerness to expand your skills on the job.
• No specific degree or prior professional Software Engineering experience required.
