Job Description

Position Overview

Join UChicago Medicine as a Patient Services Representative - Ambulatory Float on a full-time, days schedule. Be part of a world‐class academic healthcare system at our DCAM – Hyde Park clinic, where you will work with the Ambulatory Float Pool team supporting multiple outpatient clinics across specialties such as Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Primary Care, Geriatrics, Pediatrics, and more. This is a 100% onsite role requiring you to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and register patients upon arrival; collect patient demographics, referrals, guarantor, insurance, and billing information.
  • Perform preadmission, registration, discharge, and transfer processes, including pre and post-billing functions.
  • Verify insurance coverage, obtain necessary authorizations, and collaborate with the Managed Care office to interpret patient care contracts.
  • Assist patients by providing financial counseling, explaining hospital policies, and processing payments including collections and refunds.
  • Handle incoming calls, address patient inquiries in person and correspondence, and resolve disputes through effective problem solving.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, consultation notes, referral letters, and maintain departmental files.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, management, and staff
  • Exceptional customer service skills with independent thinking, sound judgment, and creativity in resolving issues
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and effectively handle challenging situations
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Basic office skills, including typing at 35 wpm and approximately 4500 keystrokes per hour
  • Ability to accurately and efficiently enter alphanumeric data on screen
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • Proficiency with personal computers and software applications including Epic
  • Successful completion of competencies related to the Cadence Scheduling system
  • Successful completion of competencies related to the Point of Service Collection policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Prior experience in a practice setting, with in-depth knowledge of appropriate insurance protocols
