Job Description Summary: Assist licensed clinicians in the provision of direct and indirect patient care on the assigned unit and in the emergency department or operating room.

Key Responsibilities

  • (40%) Performs and/or assists patients with activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, grooming, eating, walking), maintains environmental cleanliness and safety of patient rooms, units, and equipment, and supports patients, visitors, and nursing personnel. May serve as a patient safety champion, assist with telemetry cardiac monitoring by recognizing life-threatening arrhythmias, act as a transporter, and run errands related to patient care.
  • (40%) Performs delegable nursing tasks under the Registered Nurse including basic nursing care such as fingerstick glucose testing, specimen collections (urine, fecal, non-sterile), venous blood draws from upper extremities, nasogastric tube care, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing changes, urinary catheter insertion and removal, ostomy care, removal of peripheral IV catheters, and G-tube dressing changes. Accurately collects and records patient data (e.g., height, weight, vital signs, intake and output) using portable technology, and reports observations to the RN.
  • (20%) Assists hospital visitors and staff with information needs; utilizes wireless devices for scheduling, documentation, and coordination of healthcare tasks. May serve as a super user for nursing assistant information technology or act as a preceptor for new nursing assistants. Maintains and handles supplies, medications, and lab specimens essential for patient care operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High School or GED (Required)
  • Requirements: Recent graduate of an accredited nursing program or currently enrolled in the last year of an accredited nursing program with required courses and clinical objectives.
  • Qualifications: BLS certification; direct patient care skills obtained through an accredited nursing program.
