Position Overview
Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle and one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities, is recognized as a national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. We are seeking an energetic Assistant Electrical Engineer to join our Generation Engineering team. In this entry-level position, you will perform electrical engineering drafting, design, and computations for hydro power plants. You will also read and interpret plans and specifications, assist in design changes, and provide field support at scenic hydro-generating facilities across Washington State. This role reports directly to the Generation Engineering Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Designs, plans, and determines requirements for installing, maintaining, and restoring generation electrical equipment and systems.
- Monitors construction progress and provides instructions to field crews, addressing any design issues.
- Prepares schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment layout drawings using computer-aided drafting tools (AutoCAD).
- Assists Senior/Associate Engineers with field testing of automation networks, including industrial automation servers, switches, firewalls, and fiber optic network instruments.
- Helps program and maintain Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) across various plants.
- Troubleshoots and maintains electronic equipment such as temperature and vibration monitors, meters, transducers, and metering devices.
- Assists in maintaining compliance with NERC Cyber Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards.
- Participates in design teams for Capital Projects aimed at modernizing automation controls in generation facilities.
- Keeps up-to-date records of field drawings.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or expected to obtain the BSEE by September 30, 2025 (transcript required if applicable).
- Experience or preparation in professional electrical engineering work including drafting, design, and computations.
- Current Washington State driver's license or equivalent evidence of mobility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Educational training in the field of Power Engineering.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to write clear professional communications and deliver effective presentations.
- Experience working as part of a diverse team.
- Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), relays, SCADA, and RTUs is a plus.
- Willingness to learn and adapt.
