Position Overview
This public notice invites applications for an FAA authorized 2181 occupational series position. The incumbent serves as a technical authority responsible for ensuring flight test compliance in the type certification processes for avionics, propulsion, and various aircraft systems. Representing the FAA as a senior technical contact, the role involves making presentations to manufacturers and certification authorities, exercising independent judgment, and maintaining high standards of flight safety and airworthiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical authority for flight test compliance in type certification processes, covering avionics, propulsion, and mechanical/electrical systems.
- Represent the FAA as the senior technical point of contact in meetings with manufacturers, professional organizations, and foreign certification authorities.
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative flight tests to evaluate engineering data and ensure compliance with airworthiness standards.
- Recommend and implement improvements to certification processes and related internal/external procedures.
- Maintain high levels of pilot proficiency and currency in assigned aircraft categories.
Required Qualifications
- Possession of the appropriate FAA Pilot Certificate or Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate with required ratings.
- Valid First or Second-Class Medical Certificate (Medical Certificate).
- Total Flight Time of at least 1750 hours, including a minimum of 1150 hours as Pilot-In-Command.
- At least 75 hours of night flying and instrument time, with appropriate waivers where applicable.
- Completion of a flight test program or one year of directly related flight testing experience.
- U.S. Citizenship and compliance with federal conditions such as selective service registration, drug and alcohol testing, and, if required, successful security investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with international certification processes and advanced testing of aircraft systems.
- Prior service or experience with FAA regulations, technical presentations, or working in a regulatory environment.
