Job Description

Position Overview

Be a part of a world‐class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Pharmacy Technician in the Inpatient Pharmacy. In this role you will prepare medications and supplies for dispensing under the supervision of a pharmacist while rotating through all work areas of the pharmacy department. You will support direct patient care for individuals of all ages and populations. This position is Part-Time (.50 FTE) on the Evening shift at the Hyde Park campus, with anticipated every other weekend work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport medications (excluding those handled by the controlled substance distribution system), IV’s, TPN’s, chemotherapy, medication cassettes, and other supplies to nursing units and clinics. Manage re-stock medications in Omnicell machines.
  • Replace CPR cart medications following events and transfer patient-specific medications between Omnicells as needed.
  • Rotate through all pharmacy work areas – including IV Room, UD Area, manufacturing area, and satellites – to ensure proper restocking, cleaning, and inspection of areas.
  • Prepackage bulk medications by filling unit dose-specific syringes, compounding oral suspensions, and preparing Grade One mouthwash as well as compounding IV admixtures, chemotherapy, and other specialized medications.
  • Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies from the storeroom, receive drugs, and stock shelves across various pharmacy locations.
  • Facilitate timely distribution of medications in the absence of a pharmacist, prioritizing orders and STAT handling as required.
  • Complete and pass mandatory annual technician competencies, complying with departmental, hospital, and regulatory policies.
  • Prepare outpatient prescriptions, perform cashiering duties in the outpatient setting, and assist in training new pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Triaging phone communications, collecting quality assurance data, and maintaining workload records as needed.
  • Perform any other patient or drug-related duties within the legal scope of licensure as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician License
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Minimum of one year of pharmacy experience, or completion of an ASHP approved pharmacy technician vocational course, or enrollment in a college of pharmacy (including foreign pharmacy program graduates eligible for consideration)
  • Ability to work as a team player to ensure optimal patient care and superior pharmaceutical services
  • Good communication skills to interact with patients and staff
  • Strong knowledge of basic pharmacy practices, medications, and record keeping
  • Successful completion of core and annual technician competencies
  • Attention to detail and proficient verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with computers and keyboard usage
  • Sensitivity to patient care issues as related to pharmacy practice

Preferred Qualifications

  • Illinois Pharmacy Technician Certification is highly desirable
