Job Description

Position Overview

The Arlington Economic Development (AED) Department is seeking a Strategic Marketing & Communications Manager to strengthen storytelling, messaging, and a consistent voice across multiple divisions. This role will develop and implement internal and external communication strategies to elevate AED’s impact and support business growth in Arlington, VA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop strategic content for written and verbal communications that aligns with AED's mission.
  • Create messaging and communications for the department Director and Senior Leadership Team, including speech writing, talking points, and presentations.
  • Build relationships with various stakeholders to enhance engagement, awareness, and understanding through events and targeted outreach.
  • Develop and implement a public relations strategy to promote Arlington as a premiere destination for business, travel, and culture.
  • Create marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, advertisements, website content, and e-newsletters to support strategic objectives.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and manage media relations in accordance with AED’s brand and style guidelines.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to guide marketing content strategy and messaging.
  • Develop metrics and reporting to track the performance of communication efforts.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Experience Required: Significant experience developing and managing marketing and communications programs, including media relations work.
  • Substitution: Additional directly related experience can substitute for the education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in senior-level marketing, including marketing destinations to business and travel communities.
  • Background in economic development, business investment, urban planning, or real estate.
  • Expertise in public relations outreach and writing, with proficiency in the Associated Press style.
  • Experience in social media content writing and administration.
  • Experience with web content writing within a content management system.

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Hybrid office policy: in office at least three days per week)
