Job Description

Position Overview

The R&D Chemist/Scientist is responsible for providing support functions related to current products and the development of new or improved products. Working closely with the Senior Manager of Product Engineering, Product Development Chemists, and Product Development Engineers, this role performs chemical and mechanical analysis testing for existing products and evaluates the feasibility, verification, validation, and manufacturing processes of new or improved products. The role also includes maintaining the R&D Laboratory equipment and inventory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform chemical analysis testing using techniques such as Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), microscopy, pH measurement, and Karl Fischer Moisture Analysis.
  • Perform mechanical/functional analysis testing on aerosol products.
  • Collect and analyze data, interpret results, draw conclusions, and generate final reports while maintaining a laboratory notebook.
  • Execute test procedures in accordance with qualified or validated testing protocols.
  • Maintain laboratory inventories and organization, along with preventative maintenance schedules for equipment.
  • Develop and update test methods for both new and existing products, including designing instrumentation, writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), and transferring methodology.
  • Generate and document activities compliant with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Current Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP), and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) requirements.
  • Design and execute studies for new and improved products, packaging, and manufacturing processes while preparing documents required under Design Controls.
  • Manage timelines for new product development projects and improvements to existing products.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Regulatory Affairs, and Quality Assurance Departments to establish and develop requirements for products and processes.
  • Utilize recognized industry standards and statistical methods to qualify new products.
  • Initiate and maintain Engineering Change Requests (ECRs).
  • Perform in-process analysis checks of production units, including formula composition by weight.
  • Participate in training or workshop sessions as required.
  • Calibrate, set up, and repair laboratory equipment.
  • Apply strong problem-solving techniques to overcome challenges in projects and chemical analysis testing.
  • Recommend the purchase of new equipment and assist in budget planning.
  • Communicate and present technical information to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Exhibit objectivity, teamwork, and openness to feedback while collaborating with colleagues.
  • Produce clear and concise technical reports and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Chemistry, Biology, or an Engineering Discipline is required.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of prior corporate laboratory experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop analytical test methods in support of design transfer.
  • Highly organized, accurate, and detail oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Technically proficient in Microsoft Office products and general PC skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with aerosol gas handling, aerosol filling, blending, transferring, delivery, and the packaging/labeling equipment required for medical devices.
  • Working knowledge of product compatibility testing methods for aerosols.
  • Proficiency in industry standards and statistical analysis methods and techniques.
