Key Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures including taking vital signs and recording medical history responses.
- Report observed patient concerns and changes in condition to licensed staff.
- Perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived tests and report results as required.
- Carry out additional skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization, and various injections (IM, Subq, intra-dermal).
- Assist as a chaperone during patient examinations and support with procedures as requested.
- Maintain and clean patient examination rooms and unit equipment, managing supplies and reporting maintenance needs.
- Handle telephones, forward messages, and schedule appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests under direction.
- Perform routine clerical functions such as filing medical information, compiling charts, and assisting with billing entries.
- Attend and complete mandatory education including infection prevention, safety, CPR, and equipment usage training.
- Perform patient phlebotomy, apply leads, monitor diagnostic procedures, and assist in inpatient/family education as needed.
- Assist with patient transportation and instruct on Basic Life Support (BLS) requirements.
- Perform IV access and any other duties as assigned by the department.
Required Qualifications
- Verifiable completion of one (1) of the following:
- State approved EMT course
- One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting
- Medical Assisting education program
- University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire)
- Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department
- Ability to perform all essential functions of the job, including enduring long periods on your feet, moving/lifting patients, and handling equipment
- Demonstrated effective communication and human relations skills
- Proficiency in clinic specialty skills within six weeks of hire (subject to successful completion of basic competency testing)
