Job Description

Position Overview

PPG Digital Organization is seeking to drive growth and improve productivity in formulation development, product quality, and color matching. As a creative and motivated Data Scientist, you will apply scientific knowledge to develop digital solutions. You will contribute to key business projects involving machine learning, computer vision, advanced statistical analysis, data mining, optimization, and data visualization to translate innovative ideas into digital products and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Devising and applying state-of-the-art algorithms related to deep learning and reinforcement learning.
  • Evaluating AI/ML readiness and providing data acquisition recommendations to bridge gaps.
  • Visualizing data to discover and communicate solutions and opportunities.
  • Applying advanced statistics to scientific challenges.
  • Producing meaningful and actionable results quickly within collaborative teams.
  • Employing machine learning subfields (e.g., multivariate data analysis, clustering-based models, classification for image, voice, and text, regression models, and multi-objective optimization).
  • Staying current with trends in applied machine learning, computer vision, and advanced statistics.
  • Collaborating with external partners to drive groundbreaking results for PPG operations.
  • Working with global teams to translate innovative ideas into deployable digital solutions with quantifiable business impact.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science or equivalent.
  • Strong proficiency in machine learning with experience in unstructured/cognitive algorithms.
  • Strong proficiency with Python.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience using data analysis techniques to solve business-related problems (internship experience may be considered).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience delivering results at the intersection of machine learning, computer vision, engineering, and material sciences.
  • Familiarity with Matlab, R, and/or other statistical programming languages and appropriate statistical procedures.
  • Experience with state-of-the-art deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, or comparable technologies.
  • Six Sigma methodology experience (Yellow Belt and above).
  • Experience with both structured and distributed data technologies ranging from SQL to Hadoop, Hive, and Spark.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
