Job Description
Position Overview
Join to apply for the Library Graphics Designer role at City of San Antonio. Under general supervision, the Library Graphics Designer is responsible for performing general art work at a professional level, designing art and copy layouts for materials in television, newspapers, packaging, and more. The role produces both print and digital materials for the Library – including event flyers, invitations, logos, signage, t‑shirts, promotional giveaways, brochures, and presentations. Location: Central Library – 600 Soledad, San Antonio, TX 78205. Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends.
Key Responsibilities
- Study illustrations and photographs to plan presentation of material, product, or service, and brainstorm ideas for marketing campaigns.
- Plan, research, develop, and execute concepts for a variety of print and digital graphic design projects.
- Determine size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy; select style and size of type; and arrange layout based on available space and design principles.
- Draw samples of finished layouts and present them to the supervisor for approval.
- Prepare illustrations or rough sketches as per client or supervisor instructions.
- Determine style, techniques, and mediums best suited to produce desired effects in compliance with specific instructions.
- Discuss illustrations at various stages and make necessary changes.
- Prepare sequences of drawings to illustrate story developments.
- Assemble final layouts for the printer and produce camera-ready artwork for printing or silk screening.
- Determine project specifications including size, type, paper weight, ink colors, folds, cuts, costs, and completion dates.
- Maintain inventory of graphics supplies and equipment.
- Coordinate design work with photographers, typesetters, lithographers, and printers, including preparing final press files and attending press checks.
- Perform related duties as required.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s of Arts Degree from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework in Graphics Design or a related field.
- Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in drafting and graphics for projects of varied size and complexity.
- A portfolio submission is required – either a PDF or a link to an online portfolio.
- Knowledge of various art media and graphics equipment, photography techniques, and art/graphics principles.
- Ability to operate office equipment, work under tight deadlines and budget constraints, visually interpret client needs, communicate effectively, prepare accurate cost estimates, prioritize projects, and exercise independent judgment with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to perform all the physical requirements of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to manage multiple projects with excellent attention to detail in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Office 365 and PowerPoint).
- Experience with video editing and animation software (Premier Pro).
- Proficiency with the Mac computer platform is preferred.
- Aptitude for strategic thinking with a strong sense of ownership.
- Strong English proofreading skills and fluency in Spanish.
- Familiarity with ADA signage regulations and accessible design.
- Knowledge of various graphics equipment including office printers, paper cutters, laminators, and oversize printers.
