Associate Veterinarian - Non-Profit at East Bay SPCA Oakland, CA

Position Overview

East Bay SPCA in Oakland, CA is seeking an Associate Veterinarian to join our mission-driven non‐profit organization.
In this role, you will support the community by providing exceptional clinical care to both client-owned and shelter animals.
You will spend the majority of your time (75-100%) in our AAHA full-service Oakland clinic performing surgical procedures and examinations,
and up to 10% of your time on shelter animal care in both Oakland and Dublin.
The position reports to the VP of Medical Services and requires periodic travel between locations.

Compensation: $140K – $180K based on experience, plus up to $20K in annual bonuses.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care (75-100% of duties):

• Perform surgical procedures including ovariohysterectomy, orchiectomy/castration, tumor/lump removal, hernia repair, tooth extractions, and select orthopedic and ocular procedures.
• Conduct comprehensive veterinary examinations and treatments for both sheltered and client-owned animals, and assist with disposition evaluations.
• Collaborate with the VP of Medical Services and fellow veterinarians to develop and implement clinical policies and procedures.
• Establish and maintain detailed medical records and drug use logs in compliance with established standards.
• Consult regularly with clients and other veterinarians, ensuring quality care is delivered across the clinic.
• Stay current with animal health protocols, surgical techniques, and companion animal health issues while fostering positive community relationships.

Shelter Care (up to 10% of duties):

• Provide veterinary examinations and treatments for sheltered animals per established protocols.
• Maintain and update medical records during shelter rounds.
• Work collaboratively with the shelter’s medical support, behavior, and training teams to ensure optimal animal welfare.

Required Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a valid California Veterinary License.
• Must possess or be able to obtain a DEA license within 60 days of hire.
• Obtain Fear Free Certification within 90 days of hire.
• Valid California Driver’s License with an insurable driving record for occasional patient transport.
• Minimum of two years of full-time clinical experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with both clients and staff.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and computer literate in a Windows environment.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
• Physical capability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform repetitive hand movements during surgery.
