Job Description

Position Overview

The Comptroller of Maryland’s Compliance Division is seeking qualified tax auditors to join its Business Tax Audit and Individual Tax Audit teams. This position offers flexible work schedules including telework options and opportunities for field assignments. GRADE 16 (state salary guidelines may apply for current state employees) and the role is located in Baltimore, Maryland. Please note that this recruitment is position-specific and the eligible candidate list may be used to fill several current and future vacancies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive on-site and remote business tax audits to ensure compliance with Maryland’s revenue laws and identify any unpaid taxes or fees.
  • Perform complex income tax audits for individuals and pass-through entities, ensuring accurate reporting on Maryland tax returns based on federal filings.
  • Utilize specialized software and AI tools to identify and verify digital incomes, including cryptocurrencies and other crypto assets.
  • Operate independently after on-the-job training while maintaining high audit standards and following generally accepted auditing practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, OR a bachelor’s degree with at least 30 credit hours in Accounting (including 3 credit hours in auditing).
  • One year of experience in performing financial and compliance audits for a state agency, grantee, business, or other entity.
  • Applicants who met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974, are considered to have met the educational requirement.
  • Substitution of professional accounting experience, CPA/Certified Internal Auditor certification, or a Master’s degree in accounting may be considered in lieu of the required experience.
  • For education obtained outside of the United States, a detailed course-by-course evaluation by an approved credential evaluation service is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience performing tax audits for state or federal departments of revenue.
  • Experience in preparing income or business tax returns and conducting financial compliance audits.
  • Familiarity with state and federal tax laws, generally accepted auditing standards, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP).
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing methods, legal and business terminology, and experience with Revenue Premier Enterprise, SMART, or CAMS software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
