Job Description

Position Overview

Located in Kansas City, Missouri, this Full-Time role in the KC Roads department offers an exciting opportunity for a Senior Traffic Engineer/Project Manager. The candidate will lead and oversee complex traffic engineering projects, mentor technical staff, and manage project delivery from start to finish while interfacing with personnel, clients and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical staff, including engineers and design technicians, in scheduling, directing assignments, mentoring, and training.
  • Demonstrate strong project management capabilities with technical teams.
  • Apply engineering principles and traffic engineering practices to deliver high-quality projects.
  • Manage traffic engineering projects from concept through completion, ensuring adherence to time and budget constraints.
  • Provide technical leadership and career development support to engineers in training (EITs, 0–5 years experience).
  • Perform comprehensive investigations and inspections of roadway elements, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors.
  • Oversee the implementation of advanced technologies, modeling techniques, and design standards to ensure traffic safety and functionality.
  • Prepare technical drawings and specifications ensuring designs meet owner requirements and industry standards.
  • Educate stakeholders on traffic control device compliance and potential engineering solutions.
  • Review and address customer or public complaints, recommending remedial measures where necessary.
  • Research traffic data and prepare engineering studies and reports based on volume and crash data.
  • Conduct trip generation, distribution planning and traffic level-of-service analysis using microsimulation software.
  • Utilize script writing tools and big data techniques for transportation research projects.
  • Apply results from the Highway Safety Manual to guide design solution implementations.
  • Consider construction costs, regulatory constraints, environmental hazards, and risk analysis when planning projects.
  • Estimate transportation project costs using computer-assisted engineering and design software.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with traffic analysis software (e.g., Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, SIDRA, AutoCAD).
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to varying schedules and fast-paced work environments.
  • Familiarity with transportation codes, guidelines, and regulatory processes.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active PTOE license.
  • Master’s Degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a related field.
