Job Description

Position Overview

LTTS US Branch in Detroit, Michigan seeks an experienced electrical design engineer to lead the end-to-end design of automotive Battery Management Systems (BMS). In this role you will define and document the BMS electrical architecture, develop hardware components including PCBs, microcontrollers, analog/digital circuits and sensors, build and test prototypes, and ensure compliance with safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 62133. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate BMS within the overall energy storage system. Equal Opportunity Employer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end electrical design of automotive BMS, including high-voltage monitoring, cell balancing, protection circuits, and communication interfaces (CAN, LIN, SPI, etc.).
  • Define and document the BMS electrical architecture in alignment with vehicle system requirements and safety goals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external customers to define system and performance requirements.
  • Guide the hardware development of the BMS including design of PCBs, microcontrollers, analog/digital circuits, and sensor integration.
  • Create detailed schematics, evaluate component selection, and work closely with PCB layout designers to ensure design reliability and functionality.
  • Build and test hardware prototypes ensuring they meet performance and safety specifications.
  • Develop and integrate monitoring circuits and sensors to measure key battery parameters such as voltage, current, temperature, and state of charge.
  • Ensure designs comply with safety standards including ISO 26262 or IEC 62133 and perform necessary safety analyses.
  • Collaborate with software, system, and testing teams to integrate the BMS into the overall energy storage system.
  • Produce comprehensive design documentation, including specifications, test plans, DFMEA, WCCA, and test reports.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware-related issues to continually enhance BMS performance.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends and best practices.
  • Adhere to federal, state regulations and company policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and maintain predictable and reliable attendance.

Required Qualifications

  • Solid experience with Li-Ion batteries, battery pack design, electric vehicles, power systems, alternative energy systems, ECUs, MEMS, and sensors.
  • Proficiency in PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence) and simulation tools (e.g., SPICE).
  • Strong knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, microcontrollers, and sensor integration.
  • Experience with battery technologies, battery safety, and adherence to industry standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., C/C++) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with proven ability to lead design teams, conduct technical reviews, and resolve cross-disciplinary engineering challenges.
  • Experience collaborating with offshore or global teams for technical oversight and coordination.
