Job Description

Position Overview

An Emergency Medical Technician receives academic and field training in providing medical treatment at the scene of accidents or illnesses. The role involves analyzing and taking command of patient care until transport to a medical facility, working under close supervision from an Advanced Life Support Provider or an Emergency Medical Services Officer, and following medical direction from an online physician. The position requires rotating shifts—including nights, weekends, and holidays—and involves exposure to hazardous situations, emotionally traumatic events, and strenuous physical activity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-scene emergency medical treatment and manage patient care until transfer to a medical facility.
  • Follow direct supervision and instructions from advanced life support providers and emergency services officers.
  • Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays in emergency and disaster situations.
  • Perform strenuous physical activities such as lifting, climbing, and bending, and operate emergency equipment safely.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
  • Candidate must be 18 years of age and a United States Citizen or Resident Alien.
  • Must hold a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license (or equivalent) and be eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Must have current Basic Life Support Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or equivalent - OR - current Certification as a Maryland EMT.
  • Must pass a physical ability test and meet the required National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1582, as applicable.
