Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Enters patient information/medical record information into customized databases.
  • Generates reports from cumulative data for various stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and ancillary department personnel to ensure appropriate documentation supports data collection needs.
  • Conducts billing and revenue inquiries within electronic health record systems and with relevant third-party payers.
  • Abstracts inpatient and outpatient medical record data and enters it into computer systems for various projects.
  • Interprets data based on DRG, APC, ICD-9, ICD, CPT4, and HCPCS codes.
  • Generates patient data reports from databases for weekly, monthly, and ad hoc review.
  • Follows up with appropriate staff to track medical records requiring abstraction to assure timeliness of data collection.
  • Generates slides and data graphs for use at meetings as requested.
  • Conducts and participates in medical record reviews in compliance with JCAHO standards.
  • Coordinates the data collection provided through medical record review and provides reports of this data to appropriate departments/committees.
  • Transmits coded patient treatment information to payers and other recipients as needed.
  • Coordinates insurance reimbursement of care providers from payers.
  • Reviews patient bills for accuracy and completeness and obtains any missing information.
  • Follows up on unpaid claims within standard billing cycle timeframe as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, physicians, employees, and visitors.
  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Trinity Health.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology (RHIT Certified) or an allied health field.
  • 2+ years of related working experience.
  • Knowledge of CPT coding and health information technology.
