Job Description

Position Overview

The role of Small Business Underwriter I is pivotal within the Commercial Lending – Credit Department. In this remote position (AL, AR, LA, MS & TN), you will conduct credit and financial analyses for new loan requests—typically up to $250,000—to evaluate safety and soundness while minimizing risk for the organization. You will work closely with loan officers, market leaders, and various teams, reporting directly to the Small Business Underwriting Team Lead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with loan officers and market leaders to discuss credit requests and develop effective risk mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct initial reviews of incoming loan packages to assess creditworthiness and ensure compliance with policies and NCUA regulations.
  • Analyze applicants’ business operations, financial statements—including historical cash flow, balance sheet figures—and compare these to relevant benchmarks such as RMA.
  • Calculate financial ratios using methods such as UCA, Net Operating Income, EBITDA, and Global Debt Service.
  • Research and investigate industry trends and market data to support the credit analysis process.
  • Coordinate the incorporation of third-party reports into the credit analysis when appropriate.
  • Review, restructure, and determine the viability of loan projections and deals as required.
  • Prepare comprehensive credit memoranda for presentation to the Credit Committee with final recommendations.
  • Participate in periodic reviews of existing portfolio credits and assist with loan extensions or modifications as needed.
  • Stay current with industry changes, NCUA regulations, and evolving credit culture while performing general administrative duties and supporting special projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in commercial credit analysis, small business underwriting, or a related field with experience in spread analysis (balance sheets, income and cash flow statements).
  • Solid understanding of commercial and/or small business lending policies, procedures, and pertinent banking laws and regulations.
  • Excellent customer relations and communication skills.
  • A self-starter who is dependable, accurate, and meticulous with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with common software applications, including spreadsheets and word processing tools.
