Job Description

Position Overview

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at The University of Alabama is inviting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The successful candidate will play a critical role in building and leading a high‐impact research program, with a particular emphasis on solidification science and metal casting, while also contributing to both undergraduate and graduate teaching and advancing the department's research and service mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain a high-impact research program in metal casting and solidification science.
  • Collaborate with faculty across the department and the College of Engineering to expand research initiatives.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of expertise.
  • Engage in extramural funding efforts and scholarly publication to enhance the department’s national impact.
  • Contribute to service activities that support the department, college, and broader academic community.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated record of research productivity and impactful scholarly publications, particularly in metal casting and solidification science.
  • Clear potential in metallurgical engineering or materials science education and professional service.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Potential to construct and sustain a quality research program.
  • Ability to excel in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Must meet all university criteria for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A nationally and/or internationally recognized record of high-quality research and scholarly publications.
  • Significant record of scholarship in metallurgical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • Post-doctoral or equivalent post-graduate research experience.
  • Exceptional collegial, interpersonal, and mentoring skills.
