Job Description

Position Overview

The Patient Care Technician in Neurosciences at Northwestern Medicine works part‐time (10W, Days) and is responsible for assisting and supporting the Professional Registered Nurse in direct and indirect patient care. Compensation: $22.76 per hour. Placement within the salary range is dependent on relevant work experience, internal equity, and applicable collective bargaining guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct Patient Care Activities.
  • Assists with the admission, transfer, and discharge process.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respirations, weight for adults and/or neonates, height, and blood pressure.
  • Measures and records intake and output, including output from drains.
  • Applies cardiac monitor/oximetry and obtains EKG.
  • Adheres to the infant security protocol with accurate assessment of band placement.
  • Performs normal newborn hearing screening and obtains capillary blood glucose for adults and/or neonates.
  • Performs phlebotomy and applies fetal monitor equipment on pregnant patients.
  • Discontinues heplocks and foley catheters and administers enemas.
  • Collects specimens (urine, stool, blood, and sputum) on adults and/or neonates, makes rounds, and anticipates patient needs.
  • Responds to patient call lights in a timely manner, especially during emergencies.
  • Distributes fresh drinking water, prepares patients for meals, and assists or feeds patients as necessary.
  • Provides morning care, bed baths, evening care, and peri-care as indicated.
  • Provides newborn care including bathing, dressing, obtaining footprints, feeding assistance, and glucose checks.
  • Makes occupied and unoccupied beds.
  • Ambulates patients and instructs on walker, cane, and crutch walking as appropriate.
  • Assists with pre-and post-operative care, positions patients safely, and uses proper body mechanics.
  • Applies comfort and safety measures including setting side rails and ensuring call lights are accessible.
  • Sets up oxygen, suction, and other respiratory equipment for adults and/or neonates.
  • Applies dressings to Stage I and Stage II skin breakdown.
  • Prepares patient rooms for MD or RN assessments and procedures, including in the newborn nursery as directed.
  • Transports patients, equipment, and supplies during urgent situations and upon discharge.
  • Responds to emergency situations, secures assistance, and initiates basic life support when needed.
  • Reports observations and documents appropriately, promptly notifying the RN of any changes in patient condition.
  • Performs post-mortem care and transports bodies to the morgue when necessary.
  • Assumes responsibility for care of patient’s prosthetic devices, hearing aides, dentures, eyeglasses, etc.
  • Follows established policies, procedures, and standards of care in all areas.
