Job Description
Position Overview
Exponent, the only premium engineering and scientific consulting firm, is seeking a Machine Learning User Research Scientist for its Data Sciences Practice in Los Angeles, CA. In this role, you will join multidisciplinary teams to plan and execute global data collection efforts, support prototype hardware and software systems, solve technical challenges, and drive innovative data analysis for consumer electronics projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Support consulting activities for local and global programs, including protocol development, data collection, management, and analysis for building custom datasets for machine learning.
- Provide operational support for prototype hardware and software systems including system validation and troubleshooting.
- Actively solve technical and logistical problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Create and lead ad hoc interdisciplinary teams comprising consultants from Data Sciences, Human Factors, Health Sciences, and Engineering Sciences.
- Develop data analysis and visualization tools related to project management, demographics, and human-centered data.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships.
Required Qualifications
- M.S. with at least 4 years of post-degree experience or a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physiology, Human Factors, or a related engineering/scientific field. (Please note that recent M.S. graduates do not meet this requirement.)
- Ability to take an ambiguous question, use data to draw insights, and effectively communicate the results.
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas such as advanced sensing technology, networking data analysis and visualization, and designing/executing user research studies with human subjects using quantitative and qualitative methods.
- Proficiency in programming or scripting languages like Python, Shell, Java, Perl, or MATLAB.
- Experience with instrumentation, data acquisition and/or data processing, operations optimization, machine learning dataset design or optimization, and dynamic system modeling and control.
- Experience with human subjects research or collection of large experimental datasets to support machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithm development.
- Strong practical engineering ability combined with leadership, project management skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and travel globally (up to 40%).

- Compensation: Total rewards include a competitive base salary (USD $130,000.00 - USD $135,000.00 per year, dependent on experience), bi-weekly bonuses for high-intensity efforts, annual bonus, and a 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary.
