Job Description
Position Overview
This position as a Stationary Engineer is a non‐exempt role responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, adjustment, testing and repair of steam power plants, HVAC, chiller plants, fire protection systems, and other electro-mechanical building equipment in public buildings. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to lead subordinate personnel and manage emergency repairs while performing rounds across multiple facilities.
The role requires specific physical stamina and valid certifications (including Citywide Standpipe (S-13) and Automatic Sprinkler (S-12) certificates issued by the FDNY) along with hands-on experience in high-pressure boiler and chiller plant operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, repair, and adjust both manual and automatic gas and oil fired boilers, furnaces, engines, turbines, pumps, valves, generators, and associated equipment for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and lighting.
- Perform periodic equipment inspections and necessary repairs.
- Schedule and oversee preventive maintenance activities.
- Direct and supervise oilers, high-pressure plant tenders, and other subordinate personnel during operations and emergency repairs.
- Operate building maintenance and automation control consoles.
- Adjust HVAC system water chemistry through testing, treatment, and recording of readings.
- Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts as per established procedures.
- Orients, trains, and monitors personnel on plant operations and job-related safety measures.
- Monitor meters, gauges, and other recording devices while maintaining accurate logs.
- Prepare and maintain detailed technical and informational reports regarding HVAC maintenance and repairs.
Required Qualifications
- A valid License for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.
- A valid certificate of qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (Unlimited Capacity) issued by the New York City Fire Department, along with a Universal CFC Certificate issued by the EPA for Handling Refrigerants.
- Possession of one or more of the following (as required by certain colleges):
- Citywide Standpipe Certificate (S-13) issued by the New York City Fire Department.
- Citywide Automatic Sprinkler Certificate (S-12) issued by the New York City Fire Department.
- Interior Fire Alarm Certificate issued by the New York City Fire Department.
- Pool Operator's Certificate issued by a Qualified Swimming Pool Water Treatment Operator Provider.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and under conditions that may include extreme environmental factors, hazardous materials, and physical exertion.
- All licenses and certifications must be maintained for the duration of employment.
