Job Description

Position Overview

Freeform is deploying software‐defined, autonomous metal 3D printing factories around the world. As a Mechanical Engineer (New Grad Summer 2026) at Freeform, you will own projects from concept through deployment—designing complex mechanical assemblies, precision motion systems, and high‐performance thermal and fluid subsystems. You’ll work cross‐functionally with electrical and software engineering teams to integrate sub‐systems into production‐ready platforms, pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing, automation, and factory-scale integration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a responsible engineer in bringing hardware from concept to production
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to research, develop, design, and test complex mechanical components, subassemblies, equipment, and systems
  • Perform tolerance analysis of designs at the system and subsystem level
  • Plan and execute tests to evaluate the feasibility, operation, and performance of equipment and systems
  • Work hands-on to build, integrate, and validate designs and newly developed subsystems
  • Strategize continuous improvement plans to enhance system performance, reliability, and manufacturability

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering from an ABET accredited university or college
  • Hands-on design experience from internships or participation in engineering clubs (e.g., FSAE, Baja SAE, solar car, rocket club, robotics club)
  • Full life-cycle hardware design experience—from hand calculations and CAD to fabrication and testing
  • Strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals with a first-principles approach to problem solving

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • Knowledge of motion control and kinematics
  • Experience with the design of fluid or thermal systems
  • Working knowledge of electromechanical systems
  • Passion for improving metal 3D printing technology
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced and ambiguous environments with a hands-on, problem-solving mindset
  • Strong communication skills with a collaborative approach across disciplines
  • Demonstrated resilience and achievement, whether through academic performance, leadership in clubs, or overcoming adversity

Benefits & Perks

  • Inclusive and diverse culture that values collaboration, learning, and data-driven decision making
  • Opportunity to be an early and integral member of a rapidly growing company scaling a world-changing technology
  • State-of-the-art facility in Hawthorne, CA, featuring large open spaces for team collaboration, R&D, and production
  • 100% employer-paid benefits [Additional compensation details forthcoming]
