Position Overview

At M.C. Dean, we foster a collaborative environment geared towards engineering innovation and developing the next generation of technical leaders. As a Communications Apprentice, you will be provided with instruction and hands-on work experience installing basic communication equipment using hand and power tools, interpreting electrical blueprints, and applying NEC knowledge. You will also register for and attend related instruction courses in the evenings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in pulling various types of wiring and low voltage cables.
  • Help with site grounding and prefab assembly installation.
  • Support core drilling and installation of cable trays and devices.
  • Maintain a clean work area and secure company tools daily, including assisting with monthly tool checks.
  • Participate in job site cleanup and prepare work areas.
  • Use hand tools (e.g., drill motors, sawzalls, hydraulic knockouts) effectively and safely.
  • Wear all personal safety equipment and follow safety policies and Activity Hazard Analysis guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proper care of tools and adherence to material safeguarding and equipment storage practices.
  • Assist in telecom wire pulling of various sizes and actively participate in daily work briefings.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (0+ months experience required).
  • Must be 18 years of age and have reliable transportation to and from job sites and school.
  • Willingness to attend evening classes one to two nights per week for three (3) years.
  • This is a 40 hour per week position with overtime work expected and potential temporary travel.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds regularly, relocate a 12-foot stepladder, and work at heights (up to 60 feet) using scaffolds, aerial lifts, and ladders.
  • Capable of walking, climbing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead on a routine basis.
  • Possess good vision (correctable) and effective communication skills in English.
  • Able to recognize problems and apply general rules to produce logical solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to follow directions and install quality products under the guidance of Technicians or Foreman.
  • Must have a basic hand tool set, including snips and a punch down tool.
  • Experience assisting with fiber optics is a plus.
  • Vocational training in a related field is a plus.
