Position Overview
SMUD, a community-owned electric service delivering power to over 1.4 million customers, is seeking a knowledgeable Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Power Generation Engineering Department. This exciting role involves leading and supporting both capital and maintenance projects for generating assets – including hydroelectric, thermal, wind, photovoltaic facilities and a natural gas pipeline – while assisting with the gas pipeline Integrity Management program.
Compensation: Minimum Pay Rate: $136,364.00; Maximum Pay Rate: $180,606.00. This posting is open until filled – candidates are encouraged to apply early.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and integration of innovative mechanical design concepts, system improvements and energy saving measures in SMUD facilities.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, local and industry standards, codes, and SMUD construction procedures.
- Provide high-quality technical support on design, construction, testing, and modifications of mechanical systems to minimize operational impact.
- Participate in project management by developing schedules, cost estimates, and coordinating contractor activities and technical meetings.
- Establish standards, procedures, and training programs for maintenance, including test equipment usage and safety protocols.
- Analyze complex mechanical problems using data interpretation and recommend effective solutions.
- Develop and implement gas pipeline emergency preparedness, safety management, and welding control programs.
- Serve as a liaison for technical information exchange with contractors, consultants, and industry professionals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- At least 5+ years of experience in the design, maintenance, testing, or construction of mechanical systems and/or gas transmission pipeline operations.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to lead multi-faceted engineering projects.
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical system design, regulatory codes, and safety standards.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills in presenting technical information.
Preferred Qualifications
- California Professional Registration as a Mechanical Engineer (PE).
