Job Description

Position Overview

Location: Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Centennial (Frisco). Specialty/Department: Med Surg. Shift/Schedule: Full time days, three 12‑hour shifts per week with rotating weekends. Job Summary: The Patient Care Technician - Health Unit Coordinator performs various clerical and patient care duties for the department under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collects and records patient data, including vital signs, height, weight, nutritional intake and output, and performs blood glucose monitoring via finger‑stick blood samples, test strips, and portable meters. Also performs routine urinary catheter care and specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum) as requested.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living (personal hygiene, dressing, eating, maintaining continence, turning, transferring, ambulation) and changes linen as appropriate. Responds promptly to patient call lights and requests, and may serve as a sitter for patients requiring constant observation.
  • Completes and maintains unit and patient records, files, forms, and documents related to admissions, surgeries, transfers, discharges, medical records, and physician call lists. Ensures work areas and documentation are organized and updated per departmental guidelines.
  • Prepares reports, purchase orders, projects, memos, and letters using computer programs.
  • Greets visitors, responds to telephone calls, and communicates with both professional and non‑professional nursing and medical staff using pagers, beepers, and cell phones. Tracks call light response times and assigns phone/location devices to staff accordingly.
  • Performs help duties as directed by the nurse or physician, including running errands, picking up supplies, and transporting patients.
  • Maintains inventory, requisitions, and stocks work area supplies and equipment.
  • Assists with non‑medical patient care duties such as making coffee, transporting patients, and distributing ice, water, and blankets.
  • Cleans patient bedside units and nursing areas not covered by general housekeeping, ensuring equipment is properly cleaned and distributed based on patient needs.
  • Attends in‑services, unit meetings, and conferences.

Required Qualifications

  • EDUCATION: H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent
  • EXPERIENCE: Less than 1 Year of Experience
  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION: Basic Life Support (BLS) – must have BLS or obtain BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer
  • KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: Good communication skills (both verbal and written), ability to maintain patient confidentiality, and a professional, cooperative demeanor when working with patients, families, and colleagues at all levels
