Position Overview
Independence Excavating is seeking an accomplished and strategic Director of Business Development – Heavy Civil & Heavy Demolition to lead our business development efforts in securing large-scale civil and demolition construction projects. In this senior leadership role, you will drive long-term customer identification, acquisition, and retention while collaborating across departments to ensure alignment with operational capabilities. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a long-range business development strategy aligned with company goals for revenue growth and market penetration in the heavy civil and demolition sectors.
- Lead market analysis and intelligence efforts to identify high-value customer opportunities and project pursuits in targeted geographies and scopes.
- Establish and nurture long-term relationships with private owners, EPCs, engineers, and developers.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on joint ventures and strategic partnerships where applicable.
- Lead and manage a high-performing business development team across multiple regions, establishing KPIs and accountability structures while providing coaching and mentorship.
- Work closely with marketing, preconstruction, safety, and project delivery teams to coordinate messaging, proposal development, and capabilities presentations.
- Support early contractor involvement (ECI) and design-assist efforts in collaboration with technical teams, ensuring compliance and alignment with operational capacity.
- Attend industry functions, conferences, and pre-bid meetings to expand the company’s network and market presence.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in construction business development, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Proven track record in securing heavy civil and demolition projects across diverse sectors such as site development, infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, higher education, and medical facilities.
- Deep understanding of procurement processes, design-assist/design-build delivery methods, and proposal crafting in complex project environments.
- Exceptional executive communication, strategic planning, and relationship management skills.
- Experience working with large owners, general contractors, and engineering firms at the national level.
- Proficiency in CRM systems (e.g., Cosential, Salesforce) and project tracking tools.
