Job Description

Position Overview

Hennepin Healthcare is an integrated healthcare system renowned for its comprehensive services, including a Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, academic medical center, outpatient clinics, and more. We are currently seeking a Somali Interpreter to join our Interpreter Services team at the downtown Minneapolis campus. In this full-time role (Monday–Friday, 9:00am–5:30pm), you will facilitate communication for Limited English Proficient patients and their companions, ensuring equitable access to care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Precisely and accurately interpret between LEP patients, companions, and providers (face-to-face or via remote modalities such as telephone or video).
  • Provide non-complex document translation services between the target and source languages.
  • Share relevant cultural information and collaborate to ensure full understanding between patients and providers.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HHS policies and HIPAA.
  • Accurately document and bill the interpreter services provided.
  • Utilize basic computer skills to complete job functions using various software, including Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Support departmental and organizational initiatives by participating in team functions and training activities.
  • Assist in coordinating the deployment of language services as needed.
  • Adhere to the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) standards of practice and code of ethics, demonstrating honest and ethical conduct.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • At least 12 months of interpreting experience in healthcare.
  • Enrollment in the Minnesota Department of Health Interpreter Roster.
  • Completion of a 40-hour interpreter skills-based training (e.g., Bridging the Gap or The Community Interpreter) and successful completion of one of the approved interpreter competency tests:
    • Language Line: Interpreter Skills Test or Medical Certification Test.
    • Pacific Interpreters: Acceptable scores on the Medical Skills Report Level 3 and Interpreter Readiness Assessment Report Level 2.
    • Cyracom's Interpreter Skills Assessment.
    • Or any approved independent third-party healthcare interpreting skills test.
  • OR National Certification by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Minnesota.
  • Associate’s Degree or Certificate/Diploma in Translation and Interpreting from Century College, or a Certificate of Competency from an approved program.
  • National Certification in healthcare interpretation.
  • Certification by the National Boards for Certified Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or Commission of Certified Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), or an equivalent qualification.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting.
