Position Overview
The Collection Specialist at Navient is responsible for performing collection activities to recover losses from assigned accounts. This role involves locating and communicating with debtors through phone and written notices to obtain full repayment or establish acceptable payment arrangements. The position requires resolving non‐routine issues, performing skip tracing, and ensuring compliance with company, client, and federal regulations. This is a work-from-home role based in New York or onsite in Arcade, NY, with a starting pay of$16/hourand potential formonthly bonuses.
Key Responsibilities
- Communicate with debtors regarding repayment of delinquent debt.
- Achieve assigned goals related to fee collection and applications.
- Make required daily phone calls as determined by management.
- Profile debtors and update their financial information during calls.
- Negotiate repayment arrangements with debtors.
- Utilize the company telephone system for outbound and inbound calls.
- Refer accounts for legal or administrative wage garnishment processes as needed.
- Perform skip tracing to locate debtors efficiently.
- Communicate with third parties to obtain debtor location information.
- Ensure all accounts are worked within client standards and federal regulations.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all contacts made for accounts.
- Stay updated on federal and state rules governing collections and attend training sessions.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 1 year of experience in collections, customer service, telemarketing, or sales.
- High-speed internet access (minimum 10MB upload speed, 100MB download speed).
- Private workspace or home office free of distractions.
- Landline phone or cell phone.

- Bilingual (fluent in Spanish & English).
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong listening skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Good mathematical skills including calculator skills.
- Goal-oriented with a focus on meeting production and quality goals.

- Negotiation, counseling, and problem-solving skills.
- Reliable and able to work flexible hours as required.
- Ability to learn company collections computer and phone systems.
- Persistent and able to overcome objections.
