Job Description

Position Overview

The Behavioral Health Care Manager I is responsible for managing psychiatric and substance abuse treatment benefits for facility-based and outpatient settings through telephonic or written review. This role is primarily virtual, offering maximum flexibility and autonomy with required in‐person training sessions. Please note that candidates must be within a reasonable commuting distance to the designated locations: Latham, NY; Atlanta, GA; St. Louis, MO; Chicago, IL; Mendota Heights, MN; Wilmington, DE; Tampa, FL; Grand Prairie, TX; and Houston, TX.

Key Responsibilities

  • Uses appropriate screening criteria, knowledge, and clinical judgment to assess member needs and ensure access to medically necessary, quality behavioral healthcare in a cost-effective setting in accordance with UM Clinical Guidelines and contract.
  • Refers cases to Peer Reviewers as appropriate.
  • Performs psychiatric and substance abuse disorder assessments, coordination, implementation, case planning, monitoring, and evaluation to promote quality member outcomes and optimize the effective use of health benefits and community resources.

Required Qualifications

  • A MA/MS in Social Work, Counseling, Nursing, or a related behavioral health field with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in facility-based and/or outpatient psychiatric and substance abuse disorder treatment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current active unrestricted license (such as RN, LCSW, LMSW, LMHC, LPC, LBA, LMFT, or Clinical Psychologist) to practice as a health professional in applicable states. In states that do not require licensure, a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst (BCBA) is acceptable under specified conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in case management or utilization management with a broad range of complex psychiatric/substance abuse cases.
  • Strong multitasking skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Robust clinical knowledge accompanied by strong oral, written, interpersonal, problem-solving, facilitation, and analytical abilities.

  • Compensation: For candidates working in-person or virtually in designated areas, the salary range is $65,772.00 to $103,356.00, based on factors such as geographic location, experience, education, and skill level.
