Job Description

Position Overview

Fairview is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (MLS/MT) at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, MN. This is a part‐time, benefit eligible position (0.7FTE or 56 hours/2‐week pay period) on the evening shift (3:00pm – 11:30pm) with every other weekend rotation. The role includes a Shift Incentive bonus of $700 paid every 6 months. The Acute Care Laboratory is fast‐paced and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing quality testing across various diagnostic areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow established guidelines to obtain specimens and prioritize work.
  • Obtain specimens from patients of all ages and varying physical and/or mental abilities.
  • Properly verify patient identity and assess specimen integrity before testing.
  • Verify correct identification of specimens and follow guidelines for priority of testing.
  • Perform a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing including waived, moderate, or high complexity tests as defined by CLIA ’88.
  • Operate laboratory instrumentation and information systems according to procedures and complete specified instrument maintenance.
  • Recognize problems, take appropriate measures to resolve them, and act as a resource for troubleshooting laboratory procedures and unexpected events.
  • Initiate proper safety or emergency responses and consult with supervisors when needed.
  • Exercise critical thinking to maintain and improve departmental productivity and efficiency.
  • Evaluate and document testing results, ensuring they meet normal parameters or appropriate intervention protocols.
  • Communicate abnormal and critical results directly to caregivers and follow up to resolve incongruencies.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and Compliance Programs by documenting deviations, reagent checks, and QC trends.
  • Participate in the laboratory performance improvement program by collecting and reviewing data and implementing recommended actions.
  • Orient and mentor new employees and students regarding routine and complex testing methodologies, instrumentation, and information systems.
  • Ensure work review is completed before releasing results and provide progress/procedure updates to supervisors.

Required Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field including the required lab practicum or equivalent routes meeting CLIA ’88 high complexity testing personnel qualifications.
  • Baccalaureate degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. (Diploma with field study listed or transcript must be provided.)
  • Baccalaureate degree with 16 semester hours in biology (including one semester in microbiology) and 16 semester hours in chemistry (including one semester in organic or biochemistry). (Transcript must be provided.)
  • Transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. (Verification documentation required.)
  • Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course combined with a Baccalaureate degree meeting the above biology and chemistry hour requirements. (Transcript must be provided.)
  • Master’s degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biology, cytology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, allied health, medical laboratory science, or a related field from an accredited college/university. (Diploma with field study listed or transcript required.)
  • Must possess or be eligible to receive the appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification. Certification options include ASCP, ASCPi, or AMT – MLS/MT (Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist) within 1 year, or HEW Medical Technologist certification may be considered.
