Position Overview
The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County is seeking Engineers-in-Training for the new Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT). This role offers an exciting opportunity for dedicated individuals eager to join a new department focused on enhancing Nashville’s transportation network. Engineers-in-Training will engage in entry level professional engineering duties including design, construction, and/or inspection of municipal projects, as well as work related to planning, installation, and maintenance of equipment and control systems.
NDOT supports a team of nearly 400 employees responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways, 835 traffic signals, and more. The department plays a key role during major events like the CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, and Titans games. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule and telecommuting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for various projects.
- Prepare, review, and detail working drawings.
- Assist in field surveys and data verification, including in-field traffic and roadway data collection.
- Conduct studies and analyses of street lights, traffic signals, and multimodal equipment for technology improvements.
- Coordinate with engineers, developers, contractors, and planners during project planning, design, and construction phases.
- Investigate construction and design issues and prepare/review technical reports and specifications.
- Review the work of engineering technicians and engage with various stakeholders regarding department projects.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university (*No Substitution**).
- Valid Driver's License.
- Engineer in Training Certification is required. Candidates must obtain certification within six (6) months of employment. Failure to meet this requirement will result in automatic termination/dismissal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil Engineering Degree with a concentration in Traffic or Transportation.
- Candidates with accreditations earned at a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
