Position Overview

Join the City of Aurora as a SCADA OT Systems Engineer or Senior SCADA OT Systems Engineer in Aurora, Colorado. In this role, you will manage and optimize the daily operations of SCADA systems within Aurora Water’s water and wastewater operations division. You will spearhead Operational Technology (OT) initiatives, implement best practices, and ensure a stable and secure infrastructure. Compensation ranges: SCADA OT Systems Engineer: $74,523 - $116,442/year; Senior SCADA OT Systems Engineer: $90,363 - $141,192/year. This is a non-remote position that requires strong collaboration and leadership skills to support our evolving infrastructure and diverse community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee advanced administration and optimization of hosts and servers within Windows Server environments to ensure high availability and resource management.
  • Plan, design, implement, and administer the OT systems: automation control, communication, servers, virtualization, domain controllers, and Active Directory.
  • Research and evaluate new operational methods, software, techniques, and equipment to enhance existing SCADA systems and OT infrastructure.
  • Procure and resolve issues related to both software and hardware for control systems and SCADA applications.
  • Collaborate with consultants, integrators, and contractors for SCADA related projects.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and manage systems while ensuring adherence to policies and industry standards.
  • Analyze environmental performance and provide recommendations for continuous improvement and preventive maintenance strategies.
  • Guide and approve SCADA systems changes, design reviews, and new project implementations as part of cross-departmental capital projects.
  • Evaluate and specify new architectures, equipment, and vendor solutions to maintain effective SCADA operations.
  • Establish and maintain data backups and develop maintenance strategies for SCADA data files and security systems.
  • Assist with cost estimates, budgeting, and contract preparation related to SCADA, instrumentation, and controls.
  • Support the development and implementation of SCADA Master Plans, Risk and Resilience plans, and long-term OT strategies.
  • Advise on and implement improvements and protections for SCADA infrastructure and associated industrial control systems.
  • Consult with City staff, project teams, engineering departments, and vendors to ensure effective project design and execution.
  • Stay up-to-date on technical issues and emerging technologies relevant to SCADA and OT systems.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) and lead authority for SCADA/OT systems, including cybersecurity controls and virtualization.
  • Provide mentorship and technical oversight to junior engineers and technicians, ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory expectations.
  • Lead the development and enforcement of internal standards, procedures, and documentation related to SCADA/OT systems.
  • Present technical findings, proposals, and justifications to department leadership and internal governance boards.
  • Champion proactive risk management, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous improvement in SCADA engineering operations.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Associates degree in Computer Science or a directly related field for the SCADA OT Systems Engineer role; Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience) for the Senior role.
  • Experience: 3-5 years in Windows Server administration, infrastructure design, and Active Directory management required for the Engineer; 8+ years of progressively responsible experience for the Senior role.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficient in Windows Operating Systems, cybersecurity principles, disaster recovery, and SCADA/OT systems management with a strong understanding of industrial communication protocols.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Licenses: Valid Colorado Driver's license with a safe driving history.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications: CompTIA Security+, Advanced Microsoft Certifications, and other related technology industry certifications.
