Job Description

Position Overview

At Northwestern Medicine, a leader in healthcare, every patient interaction makes a difference. The Nurse Clinician plays a pivotal role in a multidisciplinary environment, utilizing expert nursing skills to assess patients both by phone and in person, implement nursing interventions, and coordinate patient education. Work is structured on a Hybrid Schedule – Monday to Friday, 8AM to 5PM; with no holidays, weekends or on-call duties (2 days/week remote post-orientation). This role requires exceptional interpersonal skills and independent judgment in resolving patient care issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and addressing any deficiencies promptly.
  • Provide pre-attending care by performing comprehensive patient assessments, seeking solutions, and documenting findings clearly and accurately.
  • Perform routine nursing duties—including phlebotomy, medication administration, vital signs measurement, lab specimen preparation, and complex specialty-related procedures—with clinical competency.
  • Interpret abnormalities in tests and procedures, take remedial actions, and document all interventions in the patient’s medical record.
  • Communicate and collaborate with clinical, administrative, and external departments to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls using clinical assessment skills, ensuring all documentation remains clear and complete.
  • Manage urgent and emergent medical situations per established protocols and operate emergency equipment as necessary.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and physicians for daily problem-solving while delegating tasks in accordance with Illinois law and organizational protocols.
  • Comply with existing policies and recommend new policies to further enhance the patient experience.
  • Initiate and coordinate patient education and participate in community outreach and specialty-related educational programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Nursing
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • State Licensed Registered Nurse for the state of employment
  • Certification in Basic CPR
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant clinical experience in an acute or ambulatory care environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (may be required for certain positions)
