A Busy Silicon Valley software technical writing consultant is looking for a Contract Technical Writer to help offload parts of multiple clients’ documentation projects. You will be briefed on context, tools, audience, scope, and priorities while working on a tight schedule. This remote role requires you to be reachable during Silicon Valley (US Pacific) business hours and offers a rare chance to work on great developer documentation for a variety of complex open‐source products.

Job Title: Contract Technical Writer, software developer doc (Job code: CRT-612)

Compensation: $50/hr on a 1099 basis if you're a bonafide business, otherwise ~$42/hr on W2 (with available benefits). This role is part-time (typically 15–20 hrs/week, but up to 40 hrs/week if supply permits) and entirely remote.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to original developer-oriented documentation such as API references, quick-start guides, and tutorials.
  • Follow directions from a technical writing consultant with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, ensuring quality, reliability, and adherence to project guidelines.
  • Utilize open-source tools such as Markdown, Git, static site generators (Hugo, Sphinx, Jekyll), and autogenerated publishing tools (Readme.io, Developer Program, Swagger/Open API Spec) to produce documentation.
  • Install products and review source code as needed to create clear, concise, and complete documentation.
  • Collaborate as an unofficial ghostwriter on fast-paced documentation projects for multiple clients.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of object-oriented and/or functional programming languages (e.g., C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, Go).
  • Familiarity with autogenerated-content authoring environments such as Readme.io, Developer Program, Stoplight.io, or Swagger/OAS.
  • Mastery of oral and written North American Business English.
  • Strong research, analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • A shareable portfolio of developer-oriented content, preferably for open-source projects.
  • Proven mathematical and computer science background and competence.
  • Ethical, trustworthy, and reliable character.

Benefits & Perks

  • $50/hr 1099 rate for established businesses or ~$42/hr on W2 with additional benefits.
  • W2 option includes a 401(k) plan, expense reimbursement, and self-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Entirely remote work from your home office with flexible hours, but must be reachable during Silicon Valley business hours.
  • For non-US nationals, compensation with US dollar–denominated Amazon gift cards is available under certain conditions.
